Background

Now in its 17th year, Echo in Context is the longest standing and most watched recurring telemedicine educational event in the world. The program is characterized by its ability to present comprehensive information in a concise and easy to understand format. The previous year’s audience always decides the topic.

“Heart Failure: Echo’s Role in an Emerging Health Crisis” will air live to Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. Broadcast time will be four and one-half hours. The audience is able to FAX or e-mail comments and questions directly to the live panel. The program always begins and ends precisely on time.

The program occurs on World Echo Day, a day so named because the audience is so large and the reach so vast. Indeed, the program has become a focus to both celebrate and critically examine echocardiography in a global perspective. It is the most popular program in all the world of echocardiography.

You may contact the program at any time by e-mail at: echo@mc.duke.edu

Past program excerpts (available in short and easy-to-access viewing segments) and educational materials are available at the program website:

Why Attend?
Heart failure is a growing problem of great significance as world populations age and more and more patients develop ischemic heart disease. There are now nearly 500,000 new cases a year in the US alone, and it is predicted it will affect more than 5 percent of the world’s population by 2010.

  • What are the origins of heart failure?
  • What are the methods of evaluation?
  • What are the best diagnostic approaches?
  • How are these methods evaluated and critically reviewed?
  • What is the role of conventional 2D, stress and contrast echo
    in diagnosis and management?
  • What are the newest treatments?
  • How can echo change your practice?
  • How can echo influence outcome?
The newest and latest pragmatic information for practice of everyday echo and Doppler is critically reviewed using caseoriented approaches. There are plenty of clinical examples that make this educational program the most popular of all world echo meetings.

This program is most unique and uses concise lectures, case reviews, and faculty discussions to construct a didactic learning experience. There are many visual cues to help beginners or those with English as a second language.

Later in the year the program is available in videotape format for further review. In fact, every annual program for the decade is available on tape to enhance the learning experience.

Program Goals:

  • To develop an understanding of the origins of heart failure.
  • To delineate the role of modern echo methods such as stress
echo, Doppler myocardial imaging and contrast echo in
    evaluation of chest pain.
  • To discuss the role of echo in changing outcome.
  • To discuss and critically review the role of echo methods in
    diagnosis and treatment.

Who Should Watch?
Cardiologists, sonographers, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, internists, general practitioners, emergency room physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with heart disease should attend.
